The Wishbone Chair is one of the chairs for which Hans J. Wegner drew his inspiration from seating furniture from the Ming-dynasty. Thanks to its iconic Y-shaped backrest, the Wishbone Chair has become somewhat of a superstar.
The elegant backrest offers comfort and freedom of movement, carrying the armrests together with the sloped hind legs – a feat of craftsmanship, which exemplifies the high quality standard at Carl Hansen & Søn.
As simple as Wegner’s designs may seem on the surface and from today’s perspective, they pushed the boundaries of carpentry due to their intricate construction.
Even today, more than 100 single steps are needed to manufacture one single chair. It takes one hour alone to weave 120 meters of paper cord for the seat, resulting in what we now understand as modern Danish design.
Originally, Hans J. Wegner designed the CH24 in teak with oak details – a version that is now being brought back to life. Carl Hansen & Søn only works with FSC-certified teak wood, which is known for its stability, durability, and lively red coloring. The initial orange-brown takes on a reddish tinge with time, giving off a warm and cozy mood.
In 2024, we would be celebrating the productive and innovative designer’s 110th birthday. To celebrate this occasion, Carl Hansen & Søn is offering the CH24 on its own or together with the CH327 Dining Table at a very attractive price point.
