The furniture manufacturer Carl Hansen & Søn is a third-generation family business, founded by Carl Hansen, a Danish carpenter, on the island of Funen in 1908. 

From the get-go, the company prescribed to two main guidelines: the highest dedication to the most exquisite craftsmanship and cooperations with exceptional designers, who have devoted their work to developing and refining modern design.  

The long-standing relationship with the greatest Danish furniture designer of the 20th century, Hans J. Wegner, had a lasting impact on Carl Hansen & Søn. 

Carl Hansen’s son Holger Hansen laid the foundation for this fruitful and creative partnership in 1949. 

Over the years, Hans J. Wegner designed a now-iconic furniture series, and is often referred to as the ‘master of chairs’ – over the course of his professional career, he designed close to 500 chairs, mostly wooden chairs, many of which are considered masterpieces of Danish furniture design.

Hans J. Wegners legacy forms a substantial part of Carl Hansen & Søn and has made the furniture manufacturer the largest producer of Wegner’s iconic designs worldwide – all made in Denmark.

Carl Hansen & Søn has always put emphasis on preserving the legacy of Danish Design while taking the basic principles of Danish modernism such as simplicity, purism, functionality, and the highest craftsmanship to the next level.

A refreshing reinterpretation of the Wegnerian design icons are the colorful and immensely successful cooperations with the British interior- and furniture designer Ilse Crawford. 

These cooperations allow for celebrations not only befitting anniversaries – like in 2021, when the campaign “Reimagining the Classics” or in 2022 “9 Colors – 9 months” gave the legendary Wishbone Chair a contemporary twist with their soft colors.
