There is a silver lining in everything, sometimes even accidents. In his youth, the Brit Paul Smith wanted to become a racing cyclist, until a car accident put a spoke in his wheel, quite literally. Thanks to this event, he changed his plans and became a fashion designer – a career which has made him world-renowned and a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the year 2000. A blessing in disguise, so to speak – or in the case of Paul Smith, a blessing in a fabulous outfit?

After his accident and thanks to his tailor father, Paul Smith took on work in a garment company and started his own business in 1970: a fashion house with a little shop in London’s Notting Hill. Ever since then, he has been designing clothing, shoes and accessories for ladies, gents and children with his fashion company Paul Smith Ltd.

Classic with a Twist

His designs share one underlying principle: Classic with a twist. Each collection reinterprets classics in a new, exciting way.

Smiths designs are characterized by their combination of traditional, classic cuts and thrilling, unusual prints – the brand’s signature slim stripes, where fourteen colors sit closely together, are known worldwide, but Smith also does planar prints ever so well: florals, dots, abstracts.

For many years, Smith has been balancing the line between High Fashion and Streetwear – resulting in fashion which is both wearable and extravagant, comfortable and stylish, varied and long-lasting.

Paul Smith aficionados appreciate the nonchalance of his refreshing designs – whether we leave the house fully or partially dressed in Paul Smith, be it in a shirt, t-shirt, sweater, dress, or sneaker; each piece elevates a look and makes us feel oh so british: somewhere between seriousness and a wink, between class and humor.

Much like his career choice, the design of his signature print, the fourteen colorful stripes, were born from necessity: when starting out as a designer, Paul Smith was on a tight budget and had to resort to slow sellers when picking his fabrics. Little did he know that these prints would one day become his signature look, gracing everything from shoe soles to the lining of his coats.
