Nymphenburg Clara

Rhinoceros
Peter Anton von Verschaffelt, ca. 1770
Porzellanmanufaktur Nymphenburg

When a full-grown Rhinoceros steps on ice, the ice is prone to break – much like Nymphenburg’s Rhinoceros by the charming name of Clara, who is prone to breaking the figurative ice, wherever she may be placed.

Clara was modelled after the first rhino to reach Europe in 1741. The elaborate, lifelike realization of her shield is especially exquisite and still carved out by hand from the finest bisque porcelain. We will be happy to provide consulting in our showroom with regard to this unique piece.
