CH24 Wishbone Chair

CHAIR
Hans J. Wegner, 1950
Carl Hansen & Søn

The Wishbone Chair belongs to a series of chairs for which Hans J. Wegner was inspired by Chinese chairs of the Ming Dynasty. Due to its striking Y-shaped backrest, the Wishbone Chair has taken on an iconic special role. The fine backrest offers comfort and freedom at the same time and, together with the oppositely curved back legs, carries the one-piece back and armrest – a masterpiece of craftsmanship that exemplifies the high quality standards of Carl Hansen & Søn.

As simple as Wegner’s designs may seem today when viewed superficially, they repeatedly brought the master carpenters to the edge of the possible due to their complex construction method. Even today, it takes more than 100 steps to make a chair. It takes an hour alone to weave the approximately 120m long paper cord for the seat. The result is what is today known as modern Danish design.
Available in solid ash, beech, oak, smoked oak, cherry and walnut.

Surface soaped, lacquered, oiled, white oiled or lacquered in CHS colours – please note that the individual surface treatments are not suitable for every type of wood. Feel free to ask us for the variants. Seat made of paper yarn braid in natural and black. A leather cushion is also available.
